1. Nearly all of the performances here are wooden. I feel Katchen is more successful with the quieter, more introspective pieces. One or two of the more vigorous works come off well enough (though still too harsh), e.g. Scherzo in E flat minor and a few of the Hungarian Dances, but overall Katchen's rigid way in these performances lacks the rapt, wistful qualities that are so important in Brahms /5(86).
